Distance: Kandy is approximately 105 km (70 miles) from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), and the travel time can range from 3 to 4 hour, depending on the mode of transport and road conditions.

1. Private Taxi or Transfer from Colombo Airport to a hotel in Kandy

Taxi is the most convenient and quickest way to get from the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) to your hotel in Kandy:

  • Airport taxis are available on arrival, but the cars are often in poor technical condition.
  • It is highly recommended to book a taxi (or private transfer) in advance for a safer and more comfortable journey.
  • Pre-booking a taxi will ensures a smoother experience, especially if you are arriving in Sri Lanka after a long flight.
  • The journey time from the airport to your hotel in Kandy by car takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.

How to get from Colombo City to Kandy

Kandy is situated roughly 115 kilometers (71 miles) away from Colombo. The journey typically takes 3 to 6 hours, depending on the chosen mode of transport and traffic conditions.

1. Train from Colombo to Kandy

Tips: While the train journey from Colombo to Kandy offers some scenic views, it is the journey from Kandy to Ella that is truly breathtaking. This route takes you through lush tea plantations, rolling hills, and dramatic valleys. Train route from Kandy to Ella is considered one of the most picturesque train rides in Sri Lanka.

However, if you are traveling from Colombo to Kandy by train, the journey is still pleasant, passing through rural landscapes and villages. Trains depart from Colombo Fort Railway Station, and the trip usually takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Types of trains from Colombo to Kandy:

  • 3rd class: 3rd class: This is the cheapest option, with basic seats, these carriages are usually incredibly crowded.
  • 2nd class: An economical choice with more comfortable seating, though without the luxury of air conditioning.
  • 1st class: The most comfortable option, featuring air-conditioned coaches with reserved seats.

Booking: Tickets can be purchased at the station or booked online in advance. Observation carriages, 1st and 2nd class trains usually sell out 1-2 months in advance, so it is advisable to book in advance.

2. Bus from Colombo to Kandy

Buses are an affordable way to travel between Colombo and Kandy. The journey takes around 3 to 6 hours, and buses depart frequently from Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal in Colombo.

  • Types of Buses: AC buses and regular non-AC buses.
  • Best for: Budget travelers looking for economical and long way to reach Kandy. I do not recommend buses for tourists with suitcases and families with children. Bus drivers tend to drive aggressively.

3. Private Taxi from your hotel in Kolombo to any hotel in Kandy

If you prefer comfort and convenience, hiring a private taxi or order transfer is the best option. The journey takes about 3 hours, depending on traffic.

  • Cost: More expensive than public transport but offers more comfort and flexibility.
  • Best for: Families, groups, or travelers with luggage.
