Travels in Asia

The Chora Mosque, also known as Kariye Mosque or historically as the Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora, is one of Istanbul’s most stunning and historically significant landmarks. Located in the Edirnekapı district, it is renowned for its breathtaking Byzantine mosaics and frescoes, which are considered some of the finest examples of Byzantine art in the world.

History of Kari̇ye Cami̇i̇ (Chora Mosque)

  1. Early Origins:
    • The original structure was built in the 4th century as part of a monastery complex outside the walls of Constantinople (hence the name "Chora," meaning "in the country" in Greek).
    • The current building dates back to the 11th century, with significant renovations and expansions in the 14th century under the patronage of Theodore Metochites, a Byzantine statesman and scholar.
  2. Byzantine Era:
    • During the Byzantine period, the Chora Church was adorned with magnificent mosaics and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. These artworks were created to reflect the theological and artistic brilliance of the time.
  3. Ottoman Era:
    • After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the church was converted into a mosque in 1511. As Islam forbids the depiction of humans and animals in mosques, the mosaics and frescoes were covered with plaster.
  4. 20th Century to Present:
    • In 1945, the building was turned into a museum (Kariye Museum). The plaster was carefully removed, revealing the stunning Byzantine artworks.
    • In 2020, it was reconverted into a mosque by the Turkish government, similar to the status change of Hagia Sophia. However, the mosaics and frescoes remain preserved and are still accessible to visitors... at least for now.

Why is the Khora Mosque worth visiting?

Since the Kariye Mosque (formerly Chora Church) is located away from the main tourist attractions, many visitors wonder: Is it worth the trip? And with its recent conversion into a mosque, some may feel uncertain about visiting.

My advice: Go while you still can! The breathtaking frescoes and mosaics inside are among the finest examples of Byzantine art. However, signs of damage suggest that they may not remain visible for much longer. Don’t miss the chance to see this historic masterpiece before it’s too late!

Mosaics in Khora Mosque:

  • The mosaics are the main attraction, depicting biblical scenes such as the Virgin Mary and Child, the Dormition of the Virgin, and the Genealogy of Christ.
  • The Deesis mosaic (Christ with the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist) is particularly famous for its emotional depth and artistic detail.

Frescoes in Chora Church:

  • The frescoes in the Parecclesion (side chapel) are equally impressive, showcasing scenes like the Resurrection (Anastasis) and the Last Judgment.
  • A silent testimony to the skill of Byzantine artists, the vibrant colours and intricate details of these frescoes.

Architecture of Kariye Mosque:

  • The building features a mix of Byzantine and Ottoman architectural elements. The domes, arches, and marble decorations reflect rich history of Chora Сhurch, which has been converted into a mosque for the second time in its history.

Tip: You can scan the QR on the information boards inside the Karie Mosque and read information about frescoes and mosaics. Please note that you will have to download quite a lot of data from the Internet. For this, it is worth having an unlimited eSIM package.

How to get to the Chora Church

The Chora Church is on quite a steep slope, so I don't recommend walking up to it from the Golden Horn side - it can be quite difficult.

Instead, it's better to take a bus or taxi to the Edirnekapı stop and then enjoy an easy walk up the slope to the church. You'll save energy and have a more enjoyable experience!

Entrance fees to the Chora Mosque

  • Free access to the mosque for Muslims and Turkish citizens only.
  • Tourists must purchase an entrance ticket for 20 euros.
  • I suggest taking a guided tour, as it can be challenging to fully understand and appreciate the significance of the frescoes and mosaics without a guide.
  • Museum Passes are not accepted for entry to the Chora Mosque.

The Chora Mosque is one of the most interesting sights in Istanbul. It is a must see for anyone fascinated by Byzantine art, history and architecture. Its breathtaking mosaics and frescoes are some of the finest in the world. They offer a rare window into the spiritual and artistic heritage of the Byzantine Empire.

Although the church of Chora has recently been converted back into a mosque, many works of Christian art remain intact. This makes it a unique symbol of Istanbul's rich and varied history, where different cultures and religions have left their mark over the centuries.
