How many airports are in Istanbul
- The main airport in Istanbul and Turkey is the New Istanbul Airport (IST) located approximately 40 km from the city centre, northwest of Istanbul.
- Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is primarily used by low-cost airlines and is located on the outskirts of the Asian part of Istanbul.
- Ataturk Airport is no longer operational.

The new Istanbul Airport has grown outside the city, on the Black Sea coast, and is approximately 40 km from the historical centre of Istanbul.
Sabiha Gokcen Budget Airport is on the outskirts of the Asian part of Istanbul.
Transportation options from Istanbul airports to the city center
If you need to get from either airport to the city centre, there are several transportation options available, including buses, taxis, and the metro.
From the New Istanbul Airport to the city centre can be reached:
- by metro,
- by buses,
- by airport taxi,
- or by a taxi transfer with fixed price.

The metro line from the New Istanbul Airport to Istanbul was launched on January 21, 2023.
However, it does not go directly to the city centre. Instead, you can transfer to the M7 line at Kağıthane station, which also does not go directly to the city centre.
To reach the city centre, you will need to take the M2 metro line or the T1 tram.
